How This Handy Little Cube Transformed My Freelance Business
When I first started freelancing, I managed multiple client accounts and tried to figure out how to divide my time appropriately to get things done. I found myself distracted by the simplest things while working from home – my TV, the laundry machine and the mailman. Just when I started to work on one project I’d try to tackle another, which led to a never-ending cycle of to-do lists.
But my entire routine changed with the help of this handy little cube.
Time blocking has drastically changed both my work and my personal life. I’ve started to use this gadget in three different ways:
Setting A Deadline for Client Work
Rather than trying to tackle eight different projects at once, I started to block off time to dedicate to one client at a time. The block has a timer with an audible alarm that can be set by turning it on the side with the amount of time you desire (five, 15, 30 or 60 minutes). I typically set it for one hour increments. For some reason, I seem to always work better on a deadline or under pressure.
Time for Distractions
Okay let’s be real – working from home sometimes means catching up on my favorite reality show while taking a break for lunch. It’s all about balance! I use my time block to set an alarm for when it’s time to get back to work. I won’t lie, it’s usually not as exciting to hear that buzzer go off…
Around the House
My time block has become a perfect tool for workouts and cleaning, too. On a day when I can’t make it to the gym, I usually do an at-home circuit. Rather than having to mess with my phone timer (usually leading me to check social media and other distractions), I reach for my block. When cleaning day rolls around I use my time block to set off time for tidying the condo and for work.
To be perfectly honest, I felt silly when I placed my Amazon order. It kind of looks like a toy for a four-year-old, doesn’t it? But it’s easily been one of the best buys I’ve made for my freelance business this year.
