The First Year: Why I Started Freelancing

'The First Year' is a series chronicling Bri Anderson's first year as a professional freelancer.

About five months ago I was sitting at my desk at my full-time corporate job wondering about my next career move. I had a great gig doing a job that I enjoyed, but I knew I could do better.

I’m Briana (Bri) Anderson, a 25-year-old newbie freelancer based in Tampa, Florida. I’ve been in the blogging and digital content world for almost 6 years. I’d always dreamed of taking my blog full-time, or creating my own agency working with clients and producing content that I loved. But, like anything else, the idea of leaving my “comfortable” full-time position for the unknown scared me to no end. Looking back now, I wish that I took the plunge sooner. For all of you in a similar situation, I’m here to share my story with you.

Rewind to December 2017 – I’m on my way home after an infuriating day (I’d had many of these over the previous months) and decided to call my mom. For those of you that don’t know me personally, my mother is my soundboard when I need that outside opinion (even if I don’t like the ugly truth she gives to me). She answered the phone and I simply said, “Mom, I think I’m going to leave [the company] and finally give freelancing a shot.” I was waiting for the freak-out and for her to advise me that I was an idiot for leaving the stable job that I had. But to my surprise, she responded with, “I think it’s time for you to go for it”. My significant other said the same thing upon my arrival back home, and I put in my two-weeks notice the next day.

Now, I know what you might be thinking – dang, she just up and left? The truth is that I had been considering freelancing full-time since January 2017. Yes, you read that right – A YEAR WENT BY. I fought myself that saying: What makes the most sense at this stage in my life? How will I find clients? What if I completely fail? I kept pushing away the most important question of them all: What if I am successful and love it? That’s the question I asked myself late last year, and I knew that only time and giving it my all would answer that question.

Fast forward to today

I’m five months into freelancing full-time with an established LLC and more client work than I thought possible as someone completely new to this.

But when you take your talent and pursue it with passion, you’d be surprised just what you’re capable of. With my background and skill set, I offer my clients an array of services including influencer marketing, digital content creation, social media management and paid media marketing. And you know the best part? It’s only the beginning! I’m tuning into podcasts, registering for webinars and courses to keep learning how I can keep taking things to the next level!

So now I have to ask you, what’s holding you back? Are you worrying about the possibilities of failure? Why are you thinking about freelancing? Are you looking to take your career to the next level?

Let’s do this together.
